Holy Assumption Joseph Volotskii Monastery was founded June 1, 1479 the Rev. Joseph Volotskii, education man of his time, writer-theologian, ecclesiastical and outstanding public figure, zealous orthodoxy. Volokolamsky monastery was one of the most important centers of literacy, its monks took an active part in the literary life of the time. The convent was assembled the largest monastic library. The oldest part of the ensemble - Epiphany Church, built in 1504, to which in the first half of the XVI century the refectory was attached building with a large One-Pillar Chamber on the top floor and several small vaulted chambers in the bottom. The unique bell XV-XVII centuries. was bombed in November 1941, the ruins of the lower tier with a plaster staircase.
