Juan Ponce de Leon (), Spanish explorer and discoverer of Florida. Ponce de Leon retired to Hispaniola (Dominican Republic), following a career that included sailing on Christopher Columbus' second voyage. His retirement was cut short when the Spanish authorities made him Adelantado (Military Governor) following the death of Columbus. His first mission in 1509 was to colonise Puerto Rico, which he accomplished with a small number of troops and a greyhound that scared the natives. He remained the first governor of the island until 1511. During his voyage of 1513, Ponce de Leon discovered land and named it Pescua Florida (the place of flowers).
