It is often found in practice that a simple circular curve willnot fit the ground in a satisfactory manner ; but that the lineneeds to curve more sharply at one place than at another. Insuch cases we employ what is termed a compound curve, inwhich several curves of different radii are combined. Thus, inFig. 18, to connect the tangents A A and B B we curve from A. Fig. 18. 32 MANUAL FOR RAILROAD ENGINEERS. to E upon the centre C, and radius A C ; from E to E uponthe centre C, and radius E C ; and from E to B upon the centreC, and radius E C. In order that the adjoining curves shouldbe properly connected, they should have a common tangent atthe point of compound curvature, as at E and E ; or, in otherwords, the centre of the cur. ^ from E to E must lie in the radiusE C of the curve from A to E ; and in the same manner thecentre C must lie in the radius E C produced. Reversed Curves. Again, it is often necessary to reverse the direction of the cur-vature, as in Fig. 19. To connect AA with B B, we may com- 2 B E / D c B F /r\ D / ^^ F y A C E A C Fit 19. mence by curving from A to E on D as a centre, thence with Cas a centre from E to R, the point of reversing,
