Or, one mans feet may be measurably higher in the instepor lower in the arch than the others. Or, there may bequite a difference between the distance from the back of theheel bone to the metatarsals in one mans feet and the distancebetween precisely the same points in the others. This last- named dimension is a very important one to be consideredin fitting a foot properly, because it fixes the location of theball points. And then there is the wTell-known difference between thelengths of individual mens feet. A recent investigation of — Line of directionof Body-weight. TH E*TRI POD OF THE FOOT 21 this matter at some of the Army concentration establish-ments showed that in the cases of 60 per cent, of the enlistedmens feet the left foot is larger than the right. In extremecases this difference between a mans feet equals two fullshoe-sizes. But this natural variation cannot be permitted toresult in either foot being fitted short; therefore, it is neces-sary, and is required by the Resco system of fitting, thateach foot shall be measured and shoes suitable for the largerfoot selected. An interesting feature of the arrangement of the bones ofthe foot is the so-called .tripod, which relates to or designatescertain contact-points in the bottom of the foot. That is tosay, the structure of the foot forms a tripod, the apex ofwhich is the highest point of the heel bone and the threefeet or
