Treasure islands, treasureships, treasure graves, and many other such possibilities havebeen many times exploited, both in fact and in story; so it isnot surprising that the California Missions should also havehad their vogue as a supposed Tom Tiddlers ground. Andas a matter of fact, a good many of the buildings show plaintraces of the ravages of pick and shovel, sometimes wieldedboldly by parties of declared prospectors, but more often insecret by knights of the dark lantern. Why it should be supposed that riches were buried in theseplaces is not clear; but somehow
