The Night Watch Sculptures Rembrandtplein Amsterdam 2006

Hand of the main foreground sculpture Captain Frans Banning Cocq in the 3D version of ‘The Night Watch’, Rembrandtplein, Amsterdam. Banning Cocq is dressed in black with a red sash in the original painting. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of Rembrandt’s birth the bronze sculptures of the characters in world-famous painting ‘The Night Watch’ are the five-year project of the Russian sculptors Mikhail Dronov and Alexander Taratynov. The sculptures were cast in Moscow and transported to the Netherlands in small groups. Measuring 15x5x7 metres, with a total weight of 8,000 kilos, they were erected in 2006. Since the 3D Nightwatch has become such a popular tourist attraction, local businesses have started a campaign to make the statues a permanent fixture. The 1852 statue of Rembrandt has been renovated especially for the anniversary. This stands above ‘The Night Watch’ characters which are in open space, allowing visitors to walk around and through the scene.
