This has been previouslynoted in connection with the portable vestibule. In the sum-mer season this often fills the car with a cloud of dust andmakes riding a discomfort. Usually the conductor pays noattention to this until some outraged passenger asks him toclose the door. Then it is often done grudgingly. Someconductors habitually comply in part and leave a 2-inchopening, as if to save labor. In winter, with a cold car, orone but partially heated, the practice is the same. Whensmoking is permitted on the rear platform, if there is avestibule, the whole car becomes a smoking compartment ifthe rear door of the car is left open when the car is going.
