He is of Scotch-Irish parent-age. In his seventh year his parents moved toGrand Rapids, Michigan, and he received his ele-mentary education in the excellent public schoolsof that State, lie was afterwards educated at theIniversity of Michigan and Eureka College, thelatter institution conferring upon him successivelythe degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Phi-losophy. In 1802 Western Michigan College con-ferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws. He was Professor of English and Philosophy atEureka College in 1887-89 and was then elected to. 1 1). M. J. Y. In 1888 he was married to Miss Lizzie Andersonof Grand Rapids, Michigan, then a student in theUniversity of Michigan. Two children have beenborn to them—James A. and William have a beautiful and happy home in Colum-bus, Ohio, with one of the largest and choicestlibraries of English literature in the State. SINA STICKEL THOMAS. Sina Stickel Thomas was born in Putnam county,Illinois, March 11, 1865. Her parents, Hiram andSarah Stickel, were both of English descent. Thefamily moved to Princeton, Illinois, in 1880. Hereshe attended the public schools, and graduated atthe township High School in 1886. She enteredthe School of Oratory, Northwestern University,in the fall of 1886 ; received her diploma from thisdepartment
