With the original Pittsburgh design, however, ashort period of trial operation, together with ex-periments with modified designs, resulted in im-portant changes that consisted in the adoption ofa front-exit door in addition to the entrance andexit doors at the center. In this modified form, thetype has been perpetuated in large numbers inPittsburgh, and, of late, in other cities. Taken together, these three cars constitutea group of particular importance, because theirwidely diversified arrangements incorporate everyimportant feature that appears in later modifica-tions of the low-floor idea.
