A pony has been hit and killed on the road by a car or lorry in the New Forest National Park, UK

A New Forest pony has been hit by a vehicle and killed. The animals of the forest are allowed to roam free to graze, but this means they wander across the roads to find better feeding areas or water to drink. An inevitable consequence of this is the occasional collision by cars or lorrys, killing or injuring ponies, cattle, pigs or deer. These accidents are due to speeding, arrogance of drivers, a lack of knowledge in how animals behave, unpredictable animal behaviour, careless driving, dangerous driving or a lack of awareness and distractions whilst driving. Drivers need to be aware that the animals have the right of way in the forest. Once an animal has been reported dead or injured the Forest Rangers, Verderers and Agisters clear up the scene. An Agister Aware sign is tied to the animal so it isn't reported again.
