Courtyard surrounded by ruins in the abandoned city of Tikal, a popular National Park in Guatemala.
One of the largest pre-Columbian Mayan sites and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tikal was established in around 400 BC and developed into a major city until it was abandoned by the end of the 10th century. Despite temples that tower high above the jungle canopy, it was apparently lost and reclaimed by the jungle, where it remained unknown to the outside world until archaeologists rediscovered the site and started mapping it in the 1880s.
