"Tens of thousands of workers, mainly from the public sector, staged a show of force today against President Sarkozy’s plans to make the French work a couple of years more before retirement. Strikes delayed flights and some commuter services as well as closing schools but the protest marches in Paris and the provinces, attended by about 750,000 people appeared to fall short of union leaders hopes. No international rail services were affected. The target of the latest protest day against Mr Sarkozy is his goal, confirmed this week, of raising the retirement age from 60 to 62 or 63. He has effectively staked his presidency on pushing through the modest rise, which would still keep the French among the world’s youngest pensioners. The unions proclaimed the protests a success while Mr Sarkozy’s aides, speaking privately, cast them as a flop. " (The Times)
