Blue sky white clouds portrait, through green tree branches, Field Cathedral of the Polish Army, Dluga Street, Warsaw, Poland
The Field Cathedral of the Polish Army, also known as the Church of Our Lady Queen of the Polish Crown, at 13/15 Dluga Street, is opposite the Warsaw Uprising Monument at Krasinski Square. The church dates to 1642. During the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, the cathedral was frequently targeted by the Luftwaffe. The western tower was used as an observation post. The crypt beneath the church was used as a Polish Home Army field hospital. Remnants of the church and hospital were destroyed by German aerial bombardment, 20 August 1944. From 1946 to 1960, the baroque architecture cathedral was restored to its former glory. The front facade, seen here, has a large tympanum pointing up to a sculpture of the Virgin Mary.
