Vivid colours and striking rock formations in the otherworldly scenery of Dalol, Ethiopia in the Danakil Depression desert
Out of fissures in the earth's crust rise spurts of heated groundwater and hot magma and create a range of neon yellows and greens and other otherworldly colors that seem from another planet. The colours come from dissolved minerals and salts that eventually harden into crystals. This alien landscape is a popular much visited tourist destination and a place of scientific interest. Dallol is home to the Erta Ale volcano, hot springs, salt flats, a salt lake and salt mountains. Salt extraction and production are the main sources of income. The Danakil Depression desert are also has sulfur, potash and other minerals in its craters.
