The year 1913 gave acollection of nearly fifty distinct named varieties of theCoUarette daliUa, including every known color in thedahlia world. The Holland Peony-flowered dahlia is now the mostpopular dahlia, possessing an entirely original form,resembling the semi-tlouble peonies; the flowers arebroad, flat, somewhat irregular in form, and are pro-duced with remarkable freedom on long stems. Thistype of dahlia has proved the most satisfactory forgarden purposes, the plants being covered with flowersthe entire season. The origin of the Holland Peony-flowered dahlia, like all other types, is uncertain,and all elTorts to secure full and definite informa-tion are unfruitful. OriginaUy the Holland Peony-flowered dahlia was grown for some years in Germany,in a mixture known as Half-double Giant Dutch grower, H. Hornsveld of Baarn, Holland, was DAHLIA DAHLIA 957. 1213. Single cactus dahlia. (XJa) the first to note theii possibilities, and selected fromthese mixed dahlias the best varieties, from whichhe propagated; then he drew the attention of the publicto his new varieties, which he named and offered forBale. Other growers in HoUantl followed his examplewith great success.
