Blue sky palm tree view of the Statue of the Virgin Mary, summit San Cristobal Hill, Santiago, Chile

At a height of 880 metres above sea-level, San Cristobal Hill, giving a superb viewpoint of Santiago, rises 300 metres above the city. Here, at the Bellavista end of the hill summit, we see the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception, celebrating the Roman Catholic doctrine that the Virgin Mary was free of all sin from the first moment of her conception (a doctrine not to be confused with the Virgin Motherhood of Christ). Pope John Paul II, in a visit to Santiago, celebrated mass in the open air church at the foot of the shrine in 1987. The 22m high statue of the Virgin Mary was donated by France in the 1920s.
