Air Force Senior Airman Taylor Savage (deployed from Charleston Air Force Base, ) and Staff Sgt. Maria Szymanski (deployed from Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho) before a May 29-30, 2013, convoy from Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, to forward operating bases and combat outposts in Wardak province. The next day, during day two of the mission, the vehicle Savage was traveling in hit an improvised explosive device, killing Army Staff Sgt. Joe Nunez, and wounding several others, including Savage.
