NOTES TO THE NARRATIVE BIOGRAPHY MARY (WHITE) ROWLANDSON was thedaughter of John and Joane White, who ap-peared in Salem as early as 1638, and movedfrom their Wenham lands to Lancafter in 1653. JohnWhite was the wealthieft of the original proprietors ofLancafter, his eftate being recorded as ^£^380 6s. ad. Asthe pound fterling in 1653 probably had a purchafingpower five or fix times as great as at the prefent day, thiswas equivalent to about twenty thoufand dollars of ourmoney. His wife, Joane, died in 1654. He furviveduntil 1673. ^^5 children, all of whom married, wereThomas, Joane, Elizabeth, Mary, Jofiah, Sarah, andHannah.
