The initial letters of thirteenth century manuscriptssometimes had their outlines stamped from blocks. German docu-ments of the fourteenth century bear the names of block cutters andcloth printers as witnesses. From the eleventh century on, the richdamasks and brocades and figured velvets of Sicily, Byzantium andItaly were imitated in German block jjrints on linen, the earlier oneswith free use of gold and silver (Plates III, VI, X).
