For this reason ma-chines have been constructedfor grinding the tread with arapidly revolving emery-wheel. In these the cast-ironwheel is made to turn slowly,whereas the emery-wheel re-volves very rapidly. Theemery-wheel is then broughtclose to the cast-iron wheel, so that as they revolve the projectionson the latter are cut away, and the tread is thus reduced to a true.
