Nezami, Persian poet, recounting the story of Alexander the Great, 12th century (18th century). Nezami Ganjavi (c1141-c1217) was one of the great Persian poets of the 12th century. The legend of Alexander was endlessly recounted in Islamic art and literature from southern Russia to the gates of India, often under the name of Iskander.
