The accompanying engraving,No. 59, represents the larger ofthe two, in which I found amongthe human ashes the bones of anembryo of six months, from whichthe entire skeleton has been re-stored by my friend, the cele-brated surgeon Aretaeos of Athens,who maintains that the preserva-tion of these small bones was onlypossible on the supposition thatthe mother had made a prematurebirth and died from its effect;that her body was burnt, and theunburnt embryo put with herashes into the funeral urn, whereI found it. No. 60 is the engraving of a large common hand-made vase with two handles, the originalbrick colour of its clay having acquired a brownish hue by age.
