DNA helix. Computer artwork of a strand of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA contains the genetic code that varies between different organisms, producing the different structures and chemistry. It is found in the cell nuclei, and comprises two sugar phosphate strands (blue) in a twisting helical shape. These strands have nucleotide bases (coloured bars) that bond to each other and join the two strands together. It is the sequence of these nucleotide bases that forms the genetic code. This genetic code is inheritable, allowing characteristics to be passed from parents to child. Billions of years of evolution has formed the diversity of life on Earth, all based on DNA.
