He possessed greatfortitude of mind as well as personal courage, andhis command of temper was such that his oldestand most intimate friends never recollected tohave seen him in a passion. His manners, thoughdignified, were simple and unaffected, and hishospitality was so unbounded that all found athis house a ready welcome. In conversation hewas fluent, eloquent and enthusiastic, and hislanguage was remarkably pure and correct.
