Bering Sea Patrol - Talking Over Old Times. Father Bernard R. Hubbard, S. J. (right), geologist of the University of Santa Clara, California, and Captain Earl K. Rhodes, USCG, commanding officer of the Coast Guard Icebreaker NORTHWIND, are "shipmates" again during the 1950 Bering Sea Patrol. The renowned "Glacier Priest" sailed with Captain Rhodes many years ago when the latter was a Lieutenant aboard the old Coast Guard Cutter NORTHLAND. A cup of coffee aboard ship recalls the way fresh water was obtained when they sailed Alaskan waters on the NORTHLAND. In those days, the inside of the lifeboat was scrubbed clean, towed up a small stream of fresh water, filled and towed back to the ship. Today, the modern method is by evaporation.
