In the same manner it rises with intestinalmeteorism, and descends with overdistention of the lungsthrough disease, , emphysema or pneumothorax. The spleen lies in close contact with the diaphragm, andextends from the left midaxillary line to a point near the leftborder of the spinal column. Its upper border follows theninth rib, its lower border the eleventh rib, for the most partbounding the left kidney. Normally the spleen cannot be out-lined by percussion, but during deep inspiration it can some- THE KIDNEYS. 39 times be palpated at the free borders of the tenth and eleventhribs. The kidneys are situated upon the right and left sides column, and extend from the levels of the twelfth dorsalto the second lumbar vertebras. The uppermost end of theright kidney (the suprarenal capsule) is slightly overlapped bythe liver and that of the left kidney by the spleen. Normal
