Asian hornet research. Researcher in protective clothing approaching an experimental beehive (metal box) with an empty nest of the Asian hornet species Vespa velutina on top of the beehive. This invasive hornet, also called the Asian predatory wasp, first appeared in France in around 2004, and has been spreading, attacking people and preying on native honeybee species. The beehive is filmed around the clock to observe hornet behaviour. It is hoped that the empty hornet nest may deter predation on the bees. This work is being done by CNRS researchers at an INRA facility in Bordeaux, France.
