Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), 16th president of the USA. 19th Century photograph of Abraham Lincoln taken whilst he was Congressman-elect from Illinois. Lincoln's distinctive appearance was due to him having Marfan's syndrome, a hereditary disorder characterized by excessive tallness, long slender fingers (seen here) and heart defects. He is best known as the president who led his country through the Civil War (1861-1865) and who liberated the southern slaves. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865. Photographed in 1846-1847.
