Brasilia, Brazil, satellite image. Brasilia was built between 1956 and 1961 to be the new capital city of Brazil. It was designed to have specific areas for a single use, such as the hotel sector and the embassy sector. Brasilia was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987 due its modernist architecture, much of it designed by Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012). Image obtained by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA's Terra satellite.
