When tuck or royalrib is being knitted, the needles actually knit only at alternate threadguides, consequently but half the number of courses will be knittedas when plain rib is being made, for during the knitting of plain rib, every needle knits its thread before taking another thread. Welts are commonly knit on the needles of a rib knitting machineby temporarily discontinuing the action of one set of needles, puttingthem out of action yet permitting them to hold their loops. After afew courses of knitting have been effected on the one set of needles, the loops of the last course of the welt are joined with the loops heldon the stems of the needles which had been temporarily put out ofaction. When knitting a welt with one set of needles only, the lengthof the welt is limited to the number of loops, or courses, that the needleswill accommodate without loading up to the danger point. 177 162 KN
