Mr. McClel-land was a member and here again his long experi-ence made him conspicuous as a prudent adviser, asagacious parliamentary leader. As a lawyer he wasterse and pointed in argument, clear, candid and impressive in his addresses to the jury. His sincerityand earnestness, with which was occasionally mingleda pleasant humor, made him an able and effectiveadvocate. In speaking before the people on politicalsubjects he was especially forcible and happy. In1870 he made the tour of Europe, which, through hisextensive personal acquaintance with European dip-lomates, he was enabled to enjoy much more thanmost travelers Mr. McClelland married, in 1837, Miss SarahR. Sabin, of Williamstown, Mass. They have hadsix children, two of whom now GO VERNORS OF MICHIGAN. 33
