This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Martian crater. Mars Express image of a crater in the Acheron Fossae region of Mars. The crater is 55 kilometres wide, and was formed by an ancient impact by an asteroid. There is also evidence of past geological activity on Mars. The ridges and canyons (horsts and grabens, vertical features) were caused by movements of the Martian crust. They extend into the older impact crater. Some smaller impact craters are also seen. This area is about 1000 kilometres north of Olympus Mons. Taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera. Mars Express has been orbiting Mars since December 2003.
