Age-old petroglyphs carved by American Indians decorate some of the volcanic rocks along hiking trails in Mojave National Preserve that covers acres of the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, California, USA. The hand-carved designs and images stand out even centuries after they were inscribed on sandstone covered with dark so-called “desert varnish” that occurs on rocks in arid regions. Created by an act of Congress in 1994 and managed by the National Park Service the vast Mojave preserve has designated Wilderness Areas and offers protection to the threatened Desert Tortoise.
