Australopithecus africanus skull (STS-5). Cast of the fossil cranium and mandible of the Australopithecus africanus specimen known as STS-5, also named 'Mrs Ples'. It was discovered at Sterkfontein by Dr Robert Broom and J. T. Robinson in April 1947. It is not certain whether the skull is from a male or female, but it is thought more likely to be a male. It dates from million to million years ago.
