Blue cornflowers in Gertrude Jekyll garden on Lindisfarne (Holy Island), Northumberland
Originally designed by Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) between 1906 and 1912, and laid out in 1911, the garden was restored between 2002 and 2006. The founder of Country Life magazine, Edward Hudson, at that time owned Lindisfarne Castle and engaged Edward Lutyens to undertaken restoration work. The current planting in the walled garden on Lindisfarne is based on Jekyll's original planting plan (now held in a collection in the USA), though it may not be an exact replica of the garden in every detail (some of the cultivars originally used are now very hard to find). The garden and Castle have been owned by the National Trust since 1944.
