Artists of the Royal Academy of Arts applying dazzle camouflage paint on model warships. The idea was credited to the British artist Norman Wilkinson who came with this idea in 1917, a time when German U-Boat attacks on British ships seemed unstoppable. With a team of five artists, three model makers, and 11 female art students they hand-colored the technical plans for the final designs. Each design had to be unique to prevent U-boat crews from getting used to them and tailored to individual ships.
