Awful air pollution from coal fires and vehicles hangs over slums in Suihua city northern China


In 2008 China officially became the worlds largest emitter of C02 greenhouse gases largely driven by its ever increasing demand for energy most of which is met by producing electricity from coal fired power stations Worryingly China is building a new coal fired power station every week and has huge reserves of coal much of which is very low grade and highly polluting Slum dwellings in Suihua Heilongjiang Province pump out coal smoke into an already highly polluted atmosphere
