Mimivirus. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of an Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus (APMV) particle. APMV is commonly known as the mimivirus. Each virus particle (black) consists of outer hairs, or fibrils, and a protein capsid enclosing a core of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the virus' genetic material. APMV's classification as a pathogen is tentative, but it is now thought that it may cause viral pneumonia. Magnification: x50,000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
