A pregnant diabetic woman holds a syringe full of colostrum, the first milk the breasts produce during pregnancy.

Colostrum harvesting can be particularly beneficial to diabetic mothers as their babies can be born with low blood sugar levels putting them at risk of neonatal hypoglycaemia and jaundice. Colostrum is the first milk produced during pregnancy and can be collected in syringes via hand expressing in the final weeks before birth. It can then be frozen and stored. When the baby is born, the milk can be defrosted and fed to the newborn via the syringe.
