Green toad on rock

Green toad (Bufotes viridis) on a rock. The green toad is a variegated toad. The well-defined dark-green patterns look like military camouflage. The skin is smoother than the common toad and the tubercles on the back, which may be red, do not stand out much. The coloration contrasts more in females. Slenderer than the common toad it also has longer legs, so it can move more swiftly. It inhabits Central and Southern Europe, Eastern Asia and North Africa on lowlands and mountains avoiding dense woodland and may also be found in city parks, gardens and housing estates. It is active in the daytime as well as at night and adults may be found far from water. Their diet includes worms, insects and slugs. They hibernate until April in holes in the earth or under fallen logs and stones. It grows up to 10 centimetres.
