For main crop sow the first week in May, and for winter use sow in June. When the plants have attained three or four leaves, thin out, so that they may stand 8 or 9 inches apart. Keep free from weeds by hand weeding and hoeing. Those in- tended for winter use may be taken up in October, and stored in dry sand in the cellar or outhouse. Before stor- ing, leaves and fibers must be trimmed off, but care must be taken not to bruise the main root. Lentz. Fine, round form, very smooth, dark blood-red, flesh very tender and sweet. The leaves are over 3 feet in length by 1 foot in width, having a glistening varnish-like surface, contrasting finely with the broad mid-ribs of various bright shades of scarlet, crimson and yellow. Per pkt., 10 cts.; oz., 20 cts. Dark Red Egyptian. The earliest variety, flat in shape, free from coarse roots, and with a small top; when full grown, becomes rather fibrous.
