The starr}'^ flounder is one of our commonest flounders. It is widely distributed, being found from southern California to the Arctic Ocean,. Fig. 98. The Starry Flounder (.Platichthys stcllatus). and southward on the Asiatic side to the Amur River. It reaches a weight of 15 or 20 pounds. It lives in shallow water and sometimes ascends the larger rivers. Commercially it is one of the important flounders on account of its size and abundance, but as a table fish it is one of the poorest, being rather coarse and tasteless, and not to be compared with some of the flounders.
