At eleven years of age hecommenced working for wages,in a drugstore. At thirteen he was apprenticedfor six years, to learn the upholsterytrade. He was baptized, in the riverClyde, by Elder John Scurrie, Oct. 25,1857, and confirmed the same day byElder Jacob Gibson; ordained a Teach-er, by Elder John Reid, April 22, 1860;and ordained to the office of Priest, byElder John Tobin, December 9, 1860. Heserved as a rifieman for three years, inthe first regiment of Lanarkshire vol-unteers (1858 to 1861). At the end ofhis apprenticeship, immediately follow-ing the death of his mother, he offered. his services to travel and preach thegospel; President George Q. Cannon ac-cepted his offer by calling him tolabor in the Liverpool office. He ar-rived thei-e June 5, 1861. and remaineduntil April 30, 1863, when, having con-tracted lung disease, he was sent toUtah, arriving in Salt Lake City , 1863, after an eventful journey. Thewinter of 1863-64 was si>ent in Salt LakeCity, working as an upholsterer andproperty maker in the Theatre, andas a compositor in the Deseret Newsoffice; the latter occupation he hadlearned in the Liverpool office. In thespring of 1864 he walked to BrighamCity, Box Elder county, where he wasemployed by Judge Samuel Smith totake charge of the postoffice and was ordained an Elder by ApostleLorenzo Snow, July 27, 1S64.
