As the column of water rises and falls toward theearth in rainbows, the steam rises and floats like a cloud. The water from Old Faithful rises from one hundredto one hundred and fifty feet. The geyser is called OldFaithful qn account of the regularity of its action. Inabout 1870 it is said to have spouted at intervals of aboutthree-quarters of an hour. At first sight the steam seemsto take the appearance of a massive female holding aninfant in her arms. This appearance is so constant that itnever fails to attract the attention of the onlooker. In oriental climes and earlier ages Old Faithfulwould have been deified and a massive temple would havebeen erected near, where might be worshipped the goddess.
