Severomorsk, Russia. Satellite view of the Russian naval base Severomorsk. Severomorsk is located above the Arctic Circle on the far north west of European Russia on the Kola bay. This port is home to the headquarters of the Russian Northern Fleet. Although lying above the Arctic Circle, the waters around Severomorsk are kept ice free due to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream. Severomorsk is closed to the general public without a pass. This image was taken by the Ikonos satellite, the first satellite to collect data at one-metre resolution. Image taken on 14 August 2002.
