Coles Hill has otherhistories also. From the first days its position overand commanding the harbor led to its being selectedas a place of defence. In 1742 the General Courtgranted a sum of money to the town to erect abattery here. In 1775, the old defence having goneto decay, a new one was built and manned, andcontinued to be kept up during the war.
