The US Essex Class carrier USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) moored at San Diego in 1970. Before being scrapped, the ship was used as a test platform for electronics, avionics and radar development. The ship was badly damaged by two kamikaze strikes in one minute on 11 May 1945 at Okinawa. he strike caught fully fuelled and armed planes on deck and started very dangerous fires. Though heavily damaged the ship did not sink and returned to the USA for repair. The ship was decommissioned in 1966 and scrapped in 1973.
