Giganotosaurus carolinii, largest carnivorous dinosaur. Palaeontologist Jorge Calvo with a life- size model of the head of the largest carnivorous dinosaur discovered to date. Bigger even than Tyrannosaurus rex, Giganotosaurus may have been the largest meat-eater to walk the Earth. Its 110- million-year-old fossil bones were found in 1993 at El Chocon, Argentina, by Calvo's colleagues Jose Bonaparte, Rodolfo Coria and Leonardo Salgado. Among the fragments were an upper jawbone and a thigh bone, both longer than matching bones in the biggest T. rex. The new species is thought to be part of the same general lineage as Tyrannosaurus. Photographed in 1995.
