Solenodon. Engraving of the Cuban solenodon, Solendon cubanus. This primitive, shrew-like insectivorous mammal is an endangered species due to the introduction of predators to its island home. A solenodon's body is about 30 centimetres (cm) long, whilst its tail is up to 25cm long. Its fur is blackish to red-brown in colour, being paler on its underside. Smell and hearing seem to be this mainly-nocturnal animal's main senses. The saliva of the solenodon is poisonous, but it will try to run or hide rather than defend itself. The solenodon is slow and clumsy, and breeds fairly slowly, raising two litters of 1-3 pups a year. Photographed from an 1895 book.
