The Arzal dam (or dam-Arzal Camoël ) is a dam on the Vilaine estuary , between the towns of Arzal and Camoël ( Morbihan ). Commissioned in 1970 , it is primarily intended to regulate the flow of the Vilaine and provide drinking water to the Guérande peninsula during the tourist season. This is a rare estuarine dam in the world. Arzal dam is located about ten kilometers upstream from the mouth of the Vilaine in the Atlantic Ocean , between the towns of Arzal (on the right bank) and Camoël (on the left bank). The idea of building a dam on the Vilaine date 1930 , after the devastating floods of 1926 and 1936 . It was mainly to fight against winter floods, exacerbated by high tides, which threatened the city of Redon , and promote the development of agriculture in the marshes of Redon. Prevented by the war , the project reappeared during the 50s . In 1961 , the development of the Institution Vilaine was created by the departments of Morbihan , the Ille-et-Vilaine and Loire-Atlantique to carry out the necessary structural adjustments. Construction of the dam began in 1962 and its completion was in 1970.
